Next Generation Explores the EU Path: from Moldova to Romania

Highlights from the 15th Eastern European Academy for Social Democracy

From September 7 to 12, 2025, the Friedrich Ebert Foundation Regional Office “Dialogue Eastern Europe”, in cooperation with the FES country offices in Moldova and Romania, hosted the 15th Eastern European Academy for Social Democracy in Chisinau and Bucharest under the title: “Navigating the Path to the EU: Experiences from the Region.”

The Academy brought together 21 young professionals from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine, and Germany, active in politics, civil society, academia, and media. Over the course of six days, participants immersed themselves in the realities of European integration, comparing Moldova’s candidate country experience with Romania’s journey as a full EU member.

Why the EU Path?

At a time when the European Union is reaffirming its commitment to enlargement, the Academy asked what meaningful European integration looks like — not only at the level of politics and institutions, but also in society, economy, and culture.

Through study visits in Chisinau and Bucharest, participants experienced two countries at different stages of the EU accession journey. Discussions with political leaders, civil society experts, journalists, and academics shed light on how the EU perspective shapes reform processes, bolsters civic resilience, and strengthens regional cooperation.

The conversations underscored both the hopes and frustrations of EU integration: from navigating complex technical reforms and ensuring public trust to countering disinformation and securing cross-border solidarity.

Hands-On Learning and Exchange

The Academy was designed as a blend of dialogue, exploration, and reflection, giving participants not only expert input but also space for their own ideas and cooperation.

Highlights of the program included:

  • In-depth discussions on EU enlargement, democratic reform, and public trust
  • Dialogues with MPs, ministries, and policy experts in Moldova and Romania
  • Sessions on disinformation, regional solidarity, and the everyday experience of EU integration
  • A study trip from Chisinau to Bucharest, tracing the EU path across borders and institutions

By moving the Academy from one capital to another, participants could witness the contrasts: Moldova’s ambitious reform agenda as a candidate country, and Romania’s experience as a member state balancing both national and European priorities.

Building Regional Networks

As with previous editions, the Academy went far beyond a seminar. It created a community of learning and trust, where young leaders from across the region could openly share experiences, challenges, and visions for the future.

Through workshops, informal exchanges, and joint reflections, participants built cross-border networks that will support progressive initiatives long after the Academy’s closing session. These bonds of cooperation are essential for addressing regional challenges that no country can face alone.

Looking Ahead

The 15th Eastern European Academy for Social Democracy once again confirmed its role as a platform for democratic values, inclusive dialogue, and progressive thinking. By connecting Moldova’s and Romania’s experiences, the Academy offered participants both practical insights and inspiration for their own work at home.
We extend our sincere thanks to all participants, speakers, and partners who contributed to making this edition a success — and to the next generation of changemakers who continue to navigate the path toward a democratic, united, and forward-looking Europe.
